What is What Next? Norfolk?
What Next? is a national movement bringing together arts and cultural organisations from across the UK to articulate and strengthen the role of culture in our society, through informed conversations with each other, audiences, policy makers, community leaders, politicians, funders, academics, business people and the public.
What Next? Norfolk is the local Chapter of What Next? which aims to bring together people involved in the arts locally to actively advocate the value of the work they do. NewsToday an application to develop Anglia Square was approved by Council representatives by a vote of 7 to 5, although Historic England have promised to take this to the supreme court to get the decision overturned. This development is seen by many to be inappropriate for Norwich and although most people believe that the area needs regenerating, this is a step backwards in terms of the style of the development - preferring retail over cultural life and high density high level accommodation. If it goes ahead in current form it stands to turf out more than 80 artists' studios so it is important that the cultural sector campaigns to make sure that there is sufficient cultural provision within the development including creative workspaces at a time when most towns and city centres are looking at moving away from retail-based developments/

The What Next? Brexit sub group have been working together to develop practical solutions that colleagues can take to ensure we make a strong case for culture within Brexit negotiations.

The What Next? Norfolk Get Creative 'What's the value of arts and culture' debate was recorded and aired on Radio Norfolk as a section of Nick Conrad's show. It was a lively and interesting discussion and over 90 people turned up. You can hear it on BBC Iplayer here, the debate starts 2 hours in.
